Cycling Options

New cycle routes, facilities and priority

Existing network

Cycling provision and usage in Cambridge is greater than most UK cities but there is scope for major improvements. Cycling use in Cambridge is well below some comparable European cities in Holland, Denmark, etc.

The cycling option

The cycling option will consider improvements to cycling facilities and also comment on some of the urban design and legal issues that may affect cycle use. For example, Holland has laws that are more likely to place the onus of blame on drivers if they are involved in an accident with cyclists. Also, many Dutch streets are designed to achieve slower vehicle speeds than in UK cities. Both of these factors tend to make cyclists feel safer and may lead to a greater number of people choosing to cycle.

Improvements to facilities could include extending the cycle network, with more crossing facilities, and major cycle hire facilities near key transport interchanges.

The study will consider creating a network of segregated cycle tracks, and the legal powers to achieve this. Segregated cycle tracks will create a safer and better quality environment for cyclists. Routes would be as direct as possible to reduce cycling distance on the main desire lines. Where possible, the option will link-up to the Sustrans national network. The cycling option would consider cycling provision within 5 miles of Cambridge.
